Heartkids Trivia Night 2008

May 10th, 2008

2008 Heartkids Trivia Night

I would like to thank all our friends that supported heartkids by attending the trivia night and helping raise money to raise awareness for children with congenital heart disease.

On the night I was asked if I would like to do the Parent’s Speech so that I introduce myself and to talk about Elizabeths Journey and this is what I said:

My name is Effie Heldzingen and I have a Heartchlild called Elizabeth who was born at St George Public Hospital on 9th November 2005 by emergency caesarian

The caesarian was all a bit of a blur to me as I was in a daze. However I did see our daughters face for a split second, and all I could hear in the background was its ok, keep breathing little one then I had a feeling that something was wrong. She didnt cry straight away and she was blue and floppy therefore was taken to the special care unit to be monitered . We were later told that she may have a heart condition and would be taken to Sydney Childrens Hospital to have further tests. My Husband and I were speachless, I still had not held my baby and was so distressed. They brought Elizabeth into the ward so I can say my goodbyes. Seeing her from a distance made me feel so happy yet sad at the same time.
The not knowing of what may happen to Elizabeth was very upsetting for us.

Leslie went with Elizabeth via nets to SCH, He inform us that she has been diagnosed with 3 Complexed Heart Conditions

1) Transposition of the Great Arteries(TGA) 2) Ventricular Septal Defect(VSD) 3) Pulmonary Atresia

These heart conditions are common on there own however its a one in a million chance that you would get all these three conditions together.
We met with the Surgeon and Cardiologists to discuss her medical conditions. Elizabeth will have 3 operations.
Elizabeth had her 1st Operation - BT-Shunt at just 2 days old which was a success.
At 1 years of age she had the 2nd Operation – Glen Procedure. This was aborted half way on the table as her heart had swollen from 13 to 20 and it was too dangerous.
We were shocked and devastated that this occurred but we were grateful that Elizabeth survived yet again another operation.
The Glen Procedure was rescheduled 3 months later and proved to be a success.
Elizabeths 4th Operation the Fontan Procedure will be when Elizabeth is about 4-5 years of age.
Elizabeth has a leaking valve which may cause some concern long term and further down the track she may need a pacemaker.
Being given all this information at the time was all confusing and trying to understand all these complexed heart conditions was frightening.

More and more children are being diagnosed with Childhood Heart Disease and we as parents of a Heartkid like many families are amazed at the lack of awareness out there for our children as its the biggest killer. Leslie and I would like to thank Heartkids for giving us the opportunity to communicate and learn from other families with Heart chilldren.

Our sincerest thanks go out to Karen Sherlock Heartkids Nsw -Randwick Senior Family Support Coordinator
You supported us even though we were all over the place and had crossed paths in and out of the ICU unit. However knowing you were there gave us inspiration and faith that everything will work out and it did.

Elizabeth is very lucky that she has a big family unit with lots of support to go around. Not to mention the Doctors and Nurses who guided us along the way.
I guess we are all given situations in life and even thought at the time it may seem uncontrolable we are more than capable of dealing with these issues at hand by being positive .
This is why it is so important to support a charity like HeartKids. HeartKids provides support and guidance to families like ours and many others by, raising awareness in the community and donating much needed funds to research.

So Please think of the kids and dig deep for HeartKids your support and generosity is greatly appreciated.
Thanks again to everyone we really appreciate all the support that you have given us throughtout Elizabeths Journey and we will never forget it !!!

Warmest Wishes Leslie Effie and Elizabeth xoxoxoxo

Elizabeth’s Love of Music

April 24th, 2008

Elizabeth Unplugged

Just like her father she loves music and most of all loves playing the guitar. She is able to express herself while playing the guitar and making her own song. Its a treasure to see her so happy and serene. I just hope if she is musically inclined that she doesnt end up a head banger like her dad :) Joke !!

Leslie will upload the video he took asap and add to this page

2008 Greek Festival Of Sydney/Elizabeth Portrait

March 30th, 2008

Greek Festval of Sydney 2008

Mum, Leslie, Effie and Elizabeth, we made our way to the train station so that we can catch a train to town hall, then we caught the monorail to Darling Harbour as today is Independance day for Greece. Our cousin Jordan is going to be dancing traditional greek dancing with his group. We bumped into Cathy, Danny, Evangeline, Isabella and had a chat while the kids were playing in the water feature. Then had lunch and fed the ducks watched the dancing and had a frappe as Elizabeth played on the swings etc.

We met up with Cousin Effie, Maggie, Nicola, Rena, Jordan. The atmosphere was so nice and the music in the background was nice. After all the festivities we found an Mini Golf Centre and thought why not, Of course Leslie won just but one point only.
After that we noticed an artist drawing portraits, so we decided to get him to sketch Elizabeths Portrait and here it is, he drew her looking like a 4 year old girl which is so amazing.

2008 Sydney Royal Easter Show

March 24th, 2008

Easter Show Effie ELizabeth Leslie

Today Pop, Grandma Feather, Nono Albert, Nona Mary, Leslie, Effie and Elizabeth woke up early to catch the train to Sydney Royal Easter Show. We just made it in time for the Dora th Explorer show. Elizabeth was in her Eliment, she was so excited to see them dancing around and her favourite songs were playing too. Leslie had Elizabeth on his shoulders as Elizabeth bounced around and clapping her hands.

Later on we all went our separate ways as we all had heaps to see and not enough time so we organised to meet later in the afternoon. Leslie, ELizabeth and Effie went on the ferris wheel which was completely enclosed, thank goodness :) as Effie i scared of heights. Then Elizabeth saw the merry-go-round with the horses and but she was a little scared sitting on the horse so Leslie sat with her in the cart instead.

We then met up with nona and nono to buy lots of show bags and later went to play some games. Effie was a professional in the darts, she got 6 in a row, woo hoo, Leslie only got 1 ha ha ha Soon after we met up with Grandma Feather and Pop so we could catch the train back home. I think we tired them out as the ended up sleeping on the train.

Later that evening we went to Cousin Effie and Dimis house for a BBQ, get together with all mums family. All in all we had a fantastic day.
Cheers Effie

Grandma Feather and Pop Visit

March 21st, 2008

Grandma Feather and Pop

Grandma Feather and Pop came to visit us from Melbourne for the Easter Period. Elizabeth was able to spend some time wit Pop and Grandma Feather as they went to visit friends too. We all went to the Easter Show and I think we tired them out so much they fell asleep on the train coming home :) Grandma and Pop also took Elizabeth for walks to the playground nearby.

We has some yummy lunch at Omeros on the beach which consisted of Seafood and salads, then walked home just in time for the footy.

We want to thank you for coming to Sydney to visit us, and appreciate all that you have done for us too !!
Lots of Love
Leslie, Effie and Elizabeth Heldzingen

After Leslie had a couple of round of tennis, we made our way over to the playground where Elizabeth was soooooooooo excited. She climbed up the steps and went down the slides. Elizabeth had such a great day she didnt want to leave.
